The free morning off-peak rail rides are part of efforts by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to moderate the demand for travel during the morning peak and to improve commuting experience on the NEL and SPLRT.
Specifically, the period of free rail travel during the morning off-peak hours would be before 7:30am, as well as between 9:00am and 9:45am.
No prior registration is required for commuters to enjoy the free travel for the first rail trip on their journey. Commuters are required to tap in and out using the same fare card or payment method.
The specific stations that would count for free rail travel, when tapping into the rail network, would be six stations on the NEL – Punggol Coast, Punggol, Sengkang, Buangkok, Hougang, and Kovan – as well as all SPLRT stations.
LTA said that by encouraging commuters to shift their travel times to before or after the peak period, it will “benefit all NEL commuters”, and those who shift their travel times can enjoy free rail travel, while others will “see reduced congestion and fewer missed trains”.
The free rail travel in the northeast is on top of the existing morning pre-peak fares scheme, where commuters can enjoy a 50-cent discount off their rail trips when they tap in at any rail station islandwide before 7:45am on weekdays, excluding public holidays.
