The Circle Line (CCL) is now completed with three new stations under the CCL stage 6 (CCL6) opening for passenger service on Jul 12, providing commuters with better connectivity by closing the loop between the existing HarbourFront and Marina Bay stations.
CCL6 comprises three new MRT stations: Keppel (CC30), Cantonment (CC31), and Prince Edward Road (CC32) stations.

“Finally, people can stop asking LTA why the Circle Line is not a circle”

During the CCL6 public preview event on Jul 4, Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow said that the CCL6 has been a project long in the making, adding that it was part of the original design years ago, but they could not start the project until land became available.
This included the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station and its tracks, which were returned to Singapore in 2011, and the port terminals in the city, after plans were firmed to move them to Tuas. CCL6 was only announced in the Land Transport Master Plan in 2013.
“Finally, people can stop asking LTA (Land Transport Authority) why the Circle Line is not a circle,” Mr Siow said.
The CCL6 opening brings the number of MRT stations from 185 to 188, and the total rail length across the network now spans around 273 km.
Mr Siow said that delivering the CCL6 was one of the “most difficult engineering projects that LTA has ever completed” as undiscovered coastal structures under the port terminal had to be removed before the project could even start.
In addition, engineers had to tunnel under the live Keppel Viaduct, which required careful work to protect the viaduct foundations so as to not affect road traffic, Mr Siow added.
With CCL6 opened, LTA said commuters will enjoy better travel times between areas in the west, such as Pasir Panjang and Kent Ridge, with the Central Business District and Marina Bay in the city centre, as well as areas in the east, such as Paya Lebar and Mountbatten.
Previously, commuters travelling by train from Telok Blangah to Marina Bay would have to transfer between the CCL, North East Line (NEL), and North-South Line (NSL).
Now, the same journey can be completed without making any transfers on a single train journey, saving around 10 minutes of travel time, added LTA.
Two existing CCL stations will have their station codes changed: Bayfront CCL station will change from CE1 to CC34, and Marina Bay CCL station will change from CE2 to CC33.
The CCL main loop will be operating at frequencies of about 2 mins during peak hours. Off-peak and weekend train frequencies will be around 5-6 mins. LTA and SMRT will monitor train loading to make necessary adjustments based on operational needs.
