We have had a very eventful 2022 for the Singapore train network.
There were deliveries of new rolling stock train models, and the overall network expanded from 243.5km to 256.7km with the opening of 11 new stations.

January 2022
Completion of Tunnelling Works for Circle Line 6
The tunnelling works for the sixth stage of the Circle Line (CCL6), connecting HarbourFront and Marina Bay MRT stations, were completed in January.
To mark the occasion, a tunnel breakthrough event was held at Cantonment MRT station on Jan 12, 2022.

February 2022
Contracts for New Trains and Depot Expansion for Sengkang-Punggol LRT
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Feb 15, 2022, that the consortium led by Mitsubishi Corporation has been awarded the contract for the procurement of 17 new 2-car LRT trains for the Sengkang–Punggol LRT (SPLRT).
To accommodate the fleet expansion on the SPLRT, the LTA had also announced that Sato Kogyo (S) Pte. Ltd. was awarded the contract to expand the SPLRT depot at Sengkang by around three times larger.

Delivery of New 7th-gen R151 Trains for North-South & East-West Lines
The delivery and arrival of the seventh-generation MRT trains — the Alstom Movia R151 — for the North-South and East-West MRT lines (NSEWL) was announced by the LTA on Feb 21, 2022.
The new R151 trains come with enhanced design and commuter-friendly features, and will make a one-to-one replacement for all 106 first, second and third-generation trains currently running on the NSEWL.

Entry into Service for Upgraded 1st-gen C751A Trains for the North East Line
The first newly upgraded first-generation MRT train for the North East Line (NEL), the Alstom Metropolis C751A, entered passenger service on Feb 28, 2022.

March 2022
Delivery of New 3rd-gen C851E Trains for the Circle Line
The first of 23 new MRT trains for the CCL — the Alstom Metropolis C851E (CCL) — arrived in Singapore on Mar 11, 2022.
Fitted with condition-monitoring and automatic track inspection systems, the C851E (CCL) trains will enter passenger service when the CCL6 opens for service.

Upcycling of MRT Seats from Decommissioned Trains
The Nee Soon Town Council and LTA collaborated to upcycle and repurpose MRT train seats from decommissioned trains that had been in service since 1987.

Delivery of 3rd-gen C801B LRT trains for the Bukit Panjang LRT
The first of 19 new third-generation Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT) trains — the Alstom Innovia APM 300R (C801B) — arrived in Singapore on Apr 16, 2022.

Opening of New Transfer Linkway at Outram Park MRT Station
A new and enhanced transfer linkway at Outram Park MRT station that connects the East-West Line (EWL) and NEL was opened on May 29, 2022.

Completion of Escalator Refurbishment Works at 42 MRT Stations
Fitted with various safety features and sensors, a total of 231 escalators across 42 stations on the NSEWL completed refurbishment work in July.

September 2022
Announcement of New Stations and Alignment of Cross Island Line Phase 2
On Sep 20, 2022, Transport Minister S Iswaran announced Phase 2 of the Cross Island Line (CRL), which includes six MRT stations that will be built and begin passenger service by 2032.
Clementi and King Albert Park MRT stations were among the six stations announced that will become new MRT interchanges.
October 2022
Opening Date for Thomson-East Coast Line 3 Announced
LTA announced on Oct 7, 2022, that the third stage of the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL3) — comprising 11 new MRT stations from Stevens to Gardens by the Bay — will be open for passenger service on Nov 13, 2022.

Launch of New Gift of Art Programme
LTA announced the new Gift of Art programme — an art donation programme established by the LTA, which complements the existing Art in Transit programme launched in 1997 — on Nov 1, 2022, to create a more enjoyable and vibrant commuting experience.
Thomson-East Coast Line 3 Opening Event
The public was given an opportunity to explore and check out the TEL3 through an opening event held on Nov 11, 2022.

Opening of 11 New MRT Stations for Thomson-East Coast Line 3
Comprising 11 new MRT stations, the third stage of the TEL began passenger service on Nov 13, 2022.
Among the newly opened stations, four stations — Stevens, Orchard, Outram Park and Marina Bay — are interchange stations, connecting TEL commuters to all existing train lines.
SMRT Launches the Rail Discovery Centre at Mandai Depot
Commemorating the 35th anniversary of Singapore’s rail network, the country’s pioneer rail operator SMRT Trains, with the support of the LTA, have launched the Singapore Rail Discovery Centre (SRDC) on Nov 21, 2022.

SBS Transit Launches New Rail Training Institute at Sengkang Depot
Public transport operator SBS Transit launched the Rail Training Institute on Dec 9, 2022, where it will invest $1 million to develop progressive training and development frameworks for rail employees.

Completion of Viaduct Beam Launching of Turnback Tracks at Pasir Ris MRT Station
New turnback tracks after Pasir Ris MRT station, which completed the viaduct beam launching on Dec 22, 2022, will enable shorter waiting times on the EWL by mid-2024.
The project to extend the railway tracks after Pasir Ris MRT station to accommodate a new railway turnback was first announced by the LTA in 2018.
