The SengkangPunggol LRT (SPLRT) will be receiving new LRT trains and an expansion of its depot facilities, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Tuesday (Feb 15).

The consortium of Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering, Ltd and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. have been awarded the contract valued at around $439 million for the procurement of 17 new two-car LRT trains for the SPLRT.

This contract includes the provision of the signalling system, guideway system and depot equipment for the upcoming depot expansion.

The 17 new LRT trains will “progressively replace the one-car trains, increasing passenger capacity on the SPLRT network” and will allow the network to “meet long-term public transport demand in Sengkang and Punggol towns”.

LTA said that the current SPLRT fleet consists of 16 two-car LRT trains and 25 one-car LRT trains, it added that “the 17 new trains are expected to be delivered progressively from 2024 to 2027.”

Sato Kogyo (S) Pte. Ltd. has been awarded a contract valued at around $157 million for the design and construction for the expansion of the SPLRT depot.

LTA said that the depot for the SPLRT, situated above the depot for the North East Line (NEL) at Sengkang, will be expanded by three times to 11.1 hectares from its present size of 3.5 hectares.

It added that the expanded depot will also include “two new reception tracks to shorten train launching time, and three new traction power substations to support the operations of the two-car trains”.

“Sato Kogyo has an established track record in undertaking infrastructure and building projects locally and abroad,” it mentioned.

The agency said that the company was previously involved in the construction of the Upper Thomson MRT station for the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), and Bencoolen, Mattar and Bedok North MRT stations for the Downtown Line (DTL).

“Depot expansion works for SPLRT will commence in the first quarter of this year and are expected to complete by 2027,” said the LTA.
