'Localised' updates to be prioritised for commuters affected by minor train delays under 30 minutes

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Dec 3 said rail operators SMRT and SBS Transit will prioritise the communication of information to commuters who are directly affected at stations during minor train delays.

Speaking to The Straits Times, LTA responded to queries by the news outlet that rail operators will “prioritise localised communications” for commuters, especially those directly affected at the stations by minor train service delays.

These “minor” train service delays refer to those involving a shorter stretch of the rail network and where disruptions to train services are expected to last no more than 30 minutes.

LTA told ST that this change is in response to feedback that communicating the maximum additional travel time “does not accurately reflect the impact of disruptions” on individual commuters.

These include commuters who are “unlikely to be affected” but would make unnecessary or costly detours if train services resumed on time.

LTA added that this new approach follows advice from a rail reliability task force, which was formed in September this year, tasked to find immediate solutions to improve rail reliability and responses to service disruptions.

Together with SMRT and SBS Transit, LTA said it intends to provide more accurate information online regarding additional travel time during train service delays.

It would be based on the specific locations and destinations of commuters, rather than offering a generic advisory on maximum travel time, to enable journey planning.

LTA’s comments on Dec 3 came after commuters expressed frustration at the lack of updates provided online during two separate train disruptions on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) in the morning of Nov 18 and on the East-West Line (EWL) in the evening of Dec 2.
