Regular East-West Line train services to resume on Dec 8, 2025
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) had initially said track works that began on Nov 29 were expected to be completed by Dec 8, with regular EWL train services then resuming by Dec 9.
During the scheduled track works, Tanah Merah and Simei stations were closed, thus there were no train services between Bedok and Tampines stations, as well as between Tanah Merah and Expo stations.
Commuters were also required to alight at Paya Lebar station and change trains before continuing their journey on the EWL.
In a Facebook update on Dec 7, LTA said regular EWL train services would instead resume on Dec 8, from the start of passenger service hours.
LTA said that it has laid tracks to connect the EWL to the new East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID) and to the new platform at Tanah Merah station.
Following that, LTA added that it had also completed comprehensive testing, including safety and ultrasonic checks on the tracks, power supply, and signalling systems.
The ECID is a 4-in-1 depot that integrates three train depots and one bus depot within a single site, serving the EWL, the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), and the Downtown Line (DTL).
ECID would also increase the capacity for train launching and withdrawals, enabling greater flexibility for the rail operator to adjust service patterns and respond quickly to incidents along the line.
The existing Changi train depot would eventually be decommissioned and fully replaced by the ECID, requiring another round of train service adjustments to be conducted in 1H 2026.
New MRT platform opens at Tanah Merah station
LTA said the new eastbound platform – for trains heading towards Pasir Ris – at Tanah Merah station will begin operations from Dec 8.
Commuters transferring at Tanah Merah station between trains towards Pasir Ris and trains towards Changi Airport are required to first head down to the station concourse level, then head back up to the respective platform.
Previously, commuters who alighted from eastbound trains at Tanah Merah station to transfer to Changi Airport-bound trains only needed to perform a cross-platform transfer on the same level, without heading down to the station concourse level.
This is to facilitate track works at the former eastbound platform, in preparation for the conversion of tracks and systems used by the TEL.
TEL would eventually replace the existing Changi Airport branch, now operated as part of the EWL, eventually linking to the future Changi Airport Terminal 5.
The MRT station at the new terminal would also be an interchange between the TEL and the upcoming Cross Island Line (CRL).
