Contract J151 for designing and building 62 new MRT trains for the JRL was awarded by LTA in February 2020 to South Korean rolling stock manufacturer Hyundai Rotem Co. at a value of around S$416.5 million.
LTA said the automated and driverless Hyundai Rotem J151 trains will be undergoing system integration tests at Tengah MRT depot in preparation for passenger service when the JRL opens in 2027.
The three-car JRL trains can be expanded to four cars, depending on the potential increase in ridership demand across the JRL in the future.
The J151 trains were designed to have “smaller, customised” carriages, allowing them to better navigate the tight curves of JRL tracks, said LTA.
These JRL trains also come with improved condition monitoring and diagnostic systems that monitor both the health of the train and detect defects and faults of the running rails when the train is deployed for passenger service.
They will also have wider doors and carriage spaces to enable better accessibility for wheelchair users or parents with baby strollers.
The remaining 61 new JRL trains will be arriving progressively from now until 2028, said LTA, with the 24-station line slated for opening in three yearly phases, from 2027 to 2029.
The JRL will also be extended, under the West Coast Extension (WCE), to link up with the Circle Line (CCL) at Kent Ridge station by the early 2040s.
The rail operator for JRL will be a joint venture between SBS Transit Rail and RATP Dev Asia Pacific, a subsidiary of French transport operator RATP Dev, under the partnership named Singapore One Rail (SOR).
The SOR partnership marks the first time a foreign transport operator will become involved with the rail industry, said LTA in November last year.
