Located between the existing Hillview (DT3) and Beauty World (DT5) stations on the DTL, the new Hume (DT4) station serves existing residential developments along Hume Avenue, with nearby residents being able to enjoy time savings when travelling on the line.
Speaking at the opening ceremony on Friday, Minister of State for Transport Murali Pillai said when the shell station box was built together with the DTL stage 2, opened in 2015, it greatly reduced the time needed to build and open the station “when the time was right”.
Works for Hume station started exactly four years ago, on Feb 28, 2021, which came with its unique challenges, Mr Pillai said, adding that construction work started from the inside out.
“When works first started, there was no access to the [provisional Hume] station box from the ground level. We had to creatively utilise the DTL itself to deliver construction material from both Gali Batu depot and Hillview station to Hume station.”
Complex technical works to integrate the power, signalling, and communications systems were carried out to the rest of the DTL without disrupting passenger service. These works, including extensive testing required, were done during limited engineering hours every night.
Mr Pillai thanked colleagues from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), rail operator SBS Transit, as well as the engineers, contractors, and partners involved in this project for their hard work in overcoming all of these challenges in building Hume station.
The opening of Hume station brings the DTL to 35 stations, making it the country’s longest underground and automated MRT line, spanning 42km.
Next year, two more stations on the DTL will open in the east to connect the DTL to the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) — Xilin (DT36) and Sungei Bedok (DT37) stations.
In early January this year, LTA announced extending the DTL beyond Bukit Panjang station to a new interchange station with the North-South Line (NSL) at Sungei Kadut by 2035.
