Local telco Singtel announced on Friday (Sep 6) that it has achieved full 5G mobile network coverage for its customers throughout Singapore’s MRT network, being the country’s first and only network provider to attain this capability.

This comes after the telco started enhancement works as early as 2022, including enabling the North East Line (NEL) with 5G mobile network coverage at all 16 NEL stations.

Singtel announced on Friday that it is the “first and only” network provider in Singapore to achieve full 5G coverage throughout the MRT network islandwide.

The telco, the largest in Singapore, added that the coverage spans all six MRT lines, as well as all 27 opened stations of Singapore’s newest MRT line, the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL).

A specialised team of engineers performed enhancement works and network upgrades as early as 2022, whereby all 16 NEL stations have been 5G-ready since early May of that year.

It highlighted that Singtel engineers had to conduct testing and installation works after train services had ended to avoid disruption to train services.

Singtel engineers also had to work within constraints that include working “within confined spaces” that require specific tools for precise and safe execution.

As such, the telco’s engineers “meticulously reconfigured existing hardware that originally served the 3G and 4G spectrums within the MRT tunnels to 5G – thus saving time and resources.”

By the end of this year, Singtel will also be progressively retiring 3G mobile network coverage across the country in preparation for a “5G future”.

Since the completion of enabling the MRT network with 5G mobile network coverage, the telco’s 5G coverage “presently spans over 1,700 outdoor and 1,000 indoor locations, including all shopping malls and transport hubs along the MRT.”

“With the enhanced coverage, consumers can now enjoy fast, reliable 5G connectivity throughout their commute on Singapore’s train network,” Singtel added.
