Construction works for the West Coast MRT station for the second phase of the Cross Island Line (CRL2) are expected to commence in the first quarter of next year, the Land Transport Authority said on Wednesday (Dec 6).

CRL is Singapore’s eighth MRT line, spanning over 50km, connecting the country’s major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi.

Gamuda Berhad Singapore Branch has been awarded the civil contract CR209 valued at around $510 million for the design and construction of the West Coast MRT station for the CRL.

LTA said the Malaysian construction firm has an “established track record in infrastructure and residential projects both locally and abroad”.

It added that the firm is currently involved in the design and construction of the Defu CRL station and the Galu Batu Bus Depot.

Measures to be Implemented for Safe and Timely Completion

The West Coast MRT station for the CRL is an underground station located along West Coast Road.

LTA said necessary diversion works to traffic and utilities will be implemented in phases to mitigate the impact on residents and other stakeholders, given the station’s proximity to existing infrastructures.

It added that “works are expected to be challenging, given the mixed ground conditions at this location, which include soft marine clay and hard sedimentary rocks”.

Earth retaining and stabilising structures will be constructed before the excavation and construction of the station structures, ensuring safety and ground stability, said LTA.

“LTA and the contractor will closely monitor the works and implement necessary mitigation measures to ensure safe and timely completion.”

Construction works for the West Coast MRT station are expected to start in the first quarter of 2024.

The CRL phase 2 is 15 kilometres long, serving new areas such as Sunset Way and West Coast that are not currently linked to an MRT line.

“With the improved connectivity, CRL phase 2 will shorten travel times for commuters travelling to and from the western parts of Singapore,” LTA had said.

Commuters can expect the CRL to reduce travelling times between West Coast and Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park from 70 minutes today to 30 minutes.

LTA also estimated that travelling times between West Coast and Bukit Panjang will also be reduced from 45 minutes today to 25 minutes.

The six-station CRL phase 2 is targeted to commence passenger service in 2032.
