The joint venture between Gamuda Berhad Singapore Branch and Wai Fong Construction Pte Ltd is awarded the civil contract worth $467 million for the design & construction of Defu MRT station and its tunnels.

LTA said Gamuda Berhad has “vast experience in infrastructure and residential projects locally and abroad,” and it is currently involved in the construction of Gali Batu Bus Depot.

Wai Fong Construction Pte Ltd has “an established track record in providing design-and-build construction services for infrastructure projects such as rail stations and tunnels”, the agency mentioned.

It added that it is currently involved in constructing two stations along the JRL as well as the road tunnels between Victoria Street and Kampong Java Road for the North-South Corridor.

Construction works to begin in Q2 2022

LTA said that excavation work at both MRT stations “are expected to be challenging” as ground conditions comprise thick and soft layers of marine clay as well as a soil-like material comprising sandy and silty clay.

It emphasised that to ensure the stability of the ground and surrounding structures, safety measures will be taken when carrying out the Earth Retaining and Stabilising Structure and deep excavation works.

“LTA and the contractors will monitor the works closely to ensure that they are carried out safely and minimise any inconvenience to stakeholders,” added LTA.

Construction works for Defu MRT station and Tampines MRT station are expected to begin in the second quarter this year.

The first phase of the Cross Island Line (CRL1) which comprises 12 stations, will span from Aviation Park to Bright Hill. LTA mentioned that the CRL1 will benefit over 100,000 households, serving both residential and industrial areas along regions of Tampines, Pasir Ris, Hougang and Ang Mo Kio.

Commuters can expect the CRL1 to reduce travelling times from Tampines North to Loyang Industrial Centre, from 40 minutes to 10 minutes. LTA also estimated that it would take 15 minutes to travel from Defu to Ang Mo Kio Central, from the 40 minutes travelling time of today.

The CRL would be Singapore’s eighth MRT line, connecting the country’s major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi. When fully completed, it will serve existing and future developments in the eastern, north-eastern and western corridors.
