SMRT’s 37-year-old Bishan Depot (BSD) is set to receive upgrades and be rejuvenated to become a model heavy maintenance facility for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), the rail operator announced on Dec 15, 2023.
The BSD is the oldest MRT depot in Singapore, located between Ang Mo Kio and Bishan MRT stations on the North-South Line (NSL).

SMRT Unveils the Bishan Depot Upgrading Project
Maintenance Efficiencies, Overhaul Capacities To Be Increased
SMRT, in close collaboration with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd. (CRRC Sifang), has unveiled the BSD Upgrading Project.
“This initiative is part of LTA’s Rail Digitalisation Roadmap and will offer valuable insights for future depot design,” added SMRT.
The BSD Upgrading Project will be leveraging advanced automation and integrated digital solutions, boosting maintenance efficiencies for increased productivity.
Building on CRRC Sifang’s experience in train manufacturing, SMRT aims to double its train overhaul capacity at BSD through this upgrading project.
SMRT said this upgrade will also “incorporate state-of-the-art ergonomic solutions that enhance workplace safety and health for our staff and increase productivity”.
