If you have frequently been taking the Downtown Line (DTL), you might have noticed that some DTL trains have been fitted with new and informative dynamic LCD screens, which the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said will be installed progressively across the fleet by 2025!

According to crowdsourced data by trainspotters on Spotters by SGTrains, 17 trains received the new upgrade to the Dynamic Route Map Display (DRMD) at the time of writing this article.

The new DRMD is able to display relevant travel information to commuters, such as a more detailed route map of the train line, greater emphasis on the arrival station & which side the door will open and alert messages such as doors closing.

From a technical perspective, having a digitalised DRMD instead of a static one can bring some advantages — such as better scalability and ease of updating the latest information — since we expect new MRT stations and interchanges to be opening in the near future.

In light of the growing emphasis on sustainability and cost-effectiveness, a digitalised DRMD avoids using unsightly stickers pasted over outdated information on older displays, which may eventually be tampered with or become weathered over time.

In a collaborative effort, users of Spotters by SGTrains have crowdsourced data and information on Bombardier MOVIA C951 trains, which have been fitted with the new DRMD.

Based on the tracking list for DTL trains with upgraded DRMDs, the first DTL train with the new DRMD was spotted in passenger service in early July 2023, with the 17th and latest train to be upgraded entering service on Tuesday (Aug 29).

Local trainspotters interested in contributing to crowdsourced information may visit this page on Spotters by SGTrains for more details.
