LTA Announces 6 MRT Stations for Cross Island Line Phase 2, Clementi & King Albert Park Become Interchanges By 2032

The upcoming Cross Island Line (CRL) will include six more MRT stations which will be built and begin passenger service by 2032, Transport Minister S Iswaran announced Phase 2 at the under-construction East Coast Integrated Depot on Tuesday (Sep 20).

CRL is Singapore’s eighth MRT line, spanning over 50km, connecting the country’s major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi.

More Convenience and Better Connectivity for Commuters in the West

The second phase of the Cross Island Line (CRL2) is 15 kilometres long, serving new areas such as Sunset Way and West Coast that are not currently linked to an MRT line.

Two stations under CRL2 will be interchanges, with King Albert Park connecting the Downtown Line (DTL) and Clementi to the East-West Line (EWL).

“With the improved connectivity, CRL2 will shorten travel times for commuters travelling to and from the western parts of Singapore,” said the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

Construction works for CRL2 will begin next year, with the stations slated for opening by 2032.

“By connecting key commuting corridors across Singapore, the Cross Island Line will help to redistribute passenger movement across rail lines, thereby improving the overall public transport experience,” said Minister S Iswaran.

“The wider and denser network will also strengthen resilience at the system level.”

8 in 10 homes within a 10-minute walk to a train station

When the CRL is fully completed, it will be the country’s longest fully underground MRT line, serving existing and future developments in the eastern, northeastern and western corridors.

LTA said this will help to achieve its target of having 8 in 10 homes within a 10-minute walk to a train station.

Shorter Travelling Times with the Cross Island Line

For instance, a student travelling from Hougang to Ngee Ann Polytechnic will have their travel time reduced from 65 minutes to only 35 minutes with the CRL, said LTA.

LTA also estimated that commuters travelling from West Coast to Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park will only take 30 minutes with the CRL, compared to the 70 minutes travelling time today.
