$644 Million Contract Awarded for Design & Construction
The joint venture between Gammon Construction and Engineering Pte. Ltd and Bachy Soletanche Singapore Pte. Ltd has been awarded the civil contract for the design and construction of Ang Mo Kio MRT station and tunnels for the Cross Island Line (CRL).
When completed, the station will have entrances that connect directly to different residential blocks, AMK Hub, Ang Mo Kio Integrated Transport Hub and Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East.
Addition and Alteration Works to existing Ang Mo Kio MRT station along North-South Line
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said that the $644 million civil contract would also include the Addition and Alteration (A&A) works to the existing Ang Mo Kio MRT station along the North-South Line (NSL).
To facilitate seamless transfer and enhance connectivity for commuters at the station, A&A works will be carried out to retrofit the existing Ang Mo Kio MRT station with additional escalators and reconfiguring of its concourse area.
To minimise inconvenience to commuters, LTA will plan and coordinate closely with transport operator SMRT to carry out the majority of the A&A works during non-operating hours.
Both companies in the joint venture have “strong track records in Singapore through infrastructure and building projects”
LTA said that Gammon Construction and Engineering has a “strong track record of undertaking infrastructure and building projects locally and abroad.”
Locally, it was previously involved in the construction of Chinatown MRT station along Downtown Line (DTL) and is currently involved in the construction of Havelock MRT station and Mayflower MRT station along the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL).
LTA said that Bachy Soletanche Singapore Pte. Ltd is a “specialist in geotechnical and civil engineering.”
The company is currently involved in the design and construction of the tunnel between Suffolk Walk and Novena Rise for the North-South Corridor, and are also involved in constructing several TEL projects such as Tanjong Rhu MRT station, Gardens by the Bay MRT station and Orchard MRT station.
Shorter Travelling Times with the Cross Island Line
The first stage of the Cross Island Line (CRL1) which comprises 12 stations, will span from Aviation Park to Bright Hill. LTA mentioned that the CRL1 will benefit over 100,000 households, serving both residential and industrial areas along regions of Tampines, Pasir Ris, Hougang and Ang Mo Kio.
Commuters can expect the CRL1 to halve travelling times from Ang Mo Kio to Pasir Ris, to just 25 minutes from an hour travel. LTA also estimated that it would only take 35 minutes to travel from Ang Mo Kio to Aviation Park, from the 105 minutes travelling time of today.
The CRL would be Singapore’s eighth MRT line, connecting the country’s major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi. When fully completed, it will serve existing and future developments in the eastern, north-eastern and western corridors.
