LTA unveils new renders for CR151 train of the Cross Island Line; public invited to vote on interior features

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has unveiled new renders for the upcoming CRRC Qingdao Sifang CR151 train of the Cross Island Line (CRL) as part of a survey for the public to vote on their preferred design on interior features.

This comes after similar public engagement surveys were conducted in 2019 for the Alstom Movia R151 train, currently running on the North-South, East-West MRT lines (NSEWL), and in 2021 for the Hyundai Rotem J151 train, for the upcoming Jurong Region Line (JRL).

In June 2023, LTA awarded Contract CR151 to supply 44 new six-carriage trains for the CRL to the consortium comprising CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd. and Singapore CRRC Sifang Railway Vehicles Service Pte. Ltd.

This model of rolling stock will come with five doors on each side, similar to the T251 trains on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), also supplied by CRRC Qingdao Sifang through a consortium with Kawasaki Railcar.

For better accessibility within the train, the gangway connectors between train carriages will also be wider at 1.6 metres, compared to the 1.4 metres used on trains for existing MRT lines.

To enhance operations and maintenance, the new CR151 trains will be equipped with condition monitoring & diagnostic systems for early detection of potential faults onboard, and some trains come with an ATI system for real-time monitoring of the running rail tracks.

These trains will also be integrated with the line’s Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, capable of fully automated train operations at a Grade of Automation (GoA) 4 without the need for onboard train attendants.

The first CR151 trains are expected to be delivered progressively from 2027 onwards, in time for the opening of CRL Phase 1 operations in 2030.
