A follow-up order for an additional eight 2-car LRT trains for the SPLRT has been placed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), said Japanese supplier MHI in a statement released.

The additional eight procured trains will also be managed by the consortium of Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering, Ltd and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd.

Speaking to The Straits Times, LTA said the contract for the additional eight 2-car trains is valued at around S$87 million.

MHI says that although the newly ordered trains will continue to feature the original exterior design, the eight new 2-car trains will be “enhanced for improved operation and maintenance (O&M) efficiency to meet LTA’s needs”.

In February 2022, the LTA announced it had awarded the Mitsubishi consortium the contract valued at around S$439 million to procure 17 new 2-car LRT trains for the SPLRT.

It also included the provision of the signalling system, guideway system and depot equipment for the upcoming depot expansion.

The new 2-car LRT trains will “progressively replace the 1-car trains, increasing passenger capacity on the SPLRT network” and will allow the SPLRT network to “meet long-term public transport demand in Sengkang and Punggol towns”.

Commuters can expect the 25 new trains to be delivered progressively from 2024 to 2027.
