Construction works for Elias MRT station under the Punggol Extension of the Cross Island Line (CRL) will begin in the second quarter of this year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced in a news release on Monday (Jan 30).

The CRL Punggol Extension (CPe) comprises four MRT stations – Pasir Ris, Elias, Riviera and Punggol – that will provide better rail connectivity and greater accessibility for 40,000 households in the eastern and north-eastern areas.

A two-company consortium under Chip Eng Seng Corporation Ltd. has been awarded the civil contract (P102) valued at around $562 million for the design and construction of Elias MRT station for the CPe.

“CES_SDC Pte. Ltd. and Chip Eng Seng Contractors (1988) Pte Ltd are established construction and civil engineering contractors with established track records in rail and infrastructure projects,” said the LTA.

CES_SDC is currently constructing two Jurong Region Line (JRL) stations and was involved in constructing the Marina South MRT station under the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL).

LTA has completed appointing contractors for all four CPe stations following the award of this contract.

Elias MRT station of the CPe, located along Pasir Ris Drive 3, is an underground station built at a depth of about 40 metres and has five entrances.

A tunnel boring machine (TBM) will be used to construct two tunnels, approximately 1.4 kilometres long and around 50 metres below ground at the deepest, linking Elias and Pasir Ris MRT stations.

LTA said the ground around the site of Elias MRT station is made up of Old Alluvium, “a predominantly soil-like material comprising sandy and silty clay”.

“LTA and the contractors will monitor the works closely to ensure that they are carried out safely with minimal impact to stakeholders,” it has said.

Commuters can expect the 7.3-kilometre-long CPe to reduce travelling times from Punggol Central to Pasir Ris, from 40 minutes to 15 minutes. LTA also estimated that it would take 20 minutes to travel from Elias to Hougang, from the 40 minutes travelling time of today.

The CRL would be Singapore’s eighth MRT line, connecting the country’s major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi. When fully completed, it will serve existing and future developments in the eastern, north-eastern and western corridors.

“More than 40,000 households are expected to benefit from the CPe.”

The CPe is targeted to commence passenger service in 2032.
