Students enrolled in the two-and-a-half-year programme, which started on Apr 4, 2022, can opt to specialise in rail or bus engineering.

In addition, they will receive a monthly salary of around $2,000 whilst they work as an apprentice at SBS Transit for four to five days every week and return to school for a day to learn about engineering basics.

The course will equip students with knowledge and skills to carry out preventive and corrective maintenance activities on trains, buses and their related systems.

Students will also be trained to use diagnostic software to assess a faulty bus, augmented reality technology and operating an MRT train simulator.

At the end of the programme, SBS Transit will invite students who perform well and are interested in pursuing a career for a job interview for the role of an assistant engineer.

ITE and SBS Transit signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday (May 4) to extend their collaboration to enhance the competency of ITE students and staff in land transport engineering.

The collaboration involves the provision of facilities and equipment, the transfer of knowledge and expertise, including capability development opportunities such as attachments, local and overseas training and involvement in industry projects.

Minister for Transport S Iswaran witnessed the signing at the Sengkang Depot for the NEL.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) expects 8,000 new public transport jobs to be created by 2030, with the aim to make the industry more innovative.
