Better access to Great World, Maxwell and Shenton Way areas

In the second half of this year, 11 new MRT stations for the TEL3 will begin passenger service, the Minister said in his speech for the COS debate.

He added that the opening of TEL3 will “connect residents in the north directly to many destinations in the city, and significantly shorten travel times”.

The upcoming TEL3 will also give commuters better access to areas such as Great World, Maxwell and Shenton Way via the MRT network.

The TEL3 has 13 MRT stations in total, but authorities have said that two MRT stations will remain closed and shall open in tandem with the developments around the station.

When the MRT line is fully completed over the next few years, more than 240,000 households will be within a 10-minute walk from a TEL station, the Minister added.

To facilitate additional engineering hours to support testing in preparation for the TEL3, rail operator SMRT have revised the line’s first train operating hours on weekends.

The joint news release by SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said that “similar arrangements were also put in place to support testing activities for TEL Stage 2.”

It emphasised that the late opening will also be in place during public holidays which fall on weekends, i.e. Labour Day (May 1) and Vesak Day (May 15).
