Construction of Two Cross Island Line MRT Stations To Start in Q2 2022

Construction works for both Serangoon North MRT station and Tavistock MRT station of the first phase of the Cross Island Line (CRL1) will begin in the second quarter of this year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Thursday (Jan 13).

Hock Lian Seng Infrastructure Pte. Ltd. has been awarded the civil contract worth $454 million for the design & construction of Serangoon North MRT station and its tunnels.

LTA said the company is “an established construction company with extensive experience in infrastructure and building projects in Singapore.”

The company was previously involved in the construction of the Kim Chuan Depot and Marina Bay MRT station for the Circle Line (CCL). It is currently involved in the construction of Maxwell MRT station for the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL).

LTA mentioned that Serangoon North MRT station will be equipped with three tracks, instead of the usual two – the additional one used for facilitating withdrawal or parking of trains.

“LTA and the contractor will closely monitor the works to ensure that they are carried out safely with minimal impact to nearby stakeholders and existing structures,” it added.

Sato Kogyo (S) Pte. Ltd has been awarded the civil contract worth $407 million for the design & construction of Tavistock MRT station and its tunnels.

LTA said the company “has a strong track record of undertaking infrastructure, building and tunnelling projects in Singapore.”

The company previously constructed Bencoolen MRT station and Mattar MRT station on the Downtown Line (DTL), and most recently the Upper Thomson MRT station along the TEL.

LTA said the ground around the station is made up of Old Alluvium, a predominantly soil-like material comprising sandy and silty clay. It added that this is expected to cause wear to the cutting equipment on the tunnel boring machines.

“LTA and the contractor will pay close attention to the tunnelling equipment and overall works to ensure they are carried out in a safe and timely manner with minimal impact to existing structures,” it added.

Construction works to begin in Q2 2022

Construction works for Serangoon North MRT station and Tavistock MRT station are expected to begin in the second quarter of this year.

Shorter Travelling Times with the Cross Island Line

The first phase of the Cross Island Line (CRL1) which comprises 12 stations, will span from Aviation Park to Bright Hill. LTA mentioned that the CRL1 will benefit over 100,000 households, serving both residential and industrial areas along regions of Tampines, Pasir Ris, Hougang and Ang Mo Kio.

Commuters can expect the CRL1 to reduce travelling times from Serangoon North to Loyang Industrial Area, from 75 minutes to 25 minutes. LTA also estimated that it would take 30 minutes to travel from Tavistock to Aviation Park, from the 95 minutes travelling time of today.

The CRL would be Singapore’s eighth MRT line, connecting the country’s major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi. When fully completed, it will serve existing and future developments in the eastern, north-eastern and western corridors.
