Majority Using Stored Value Cards or Account-based Ticketing

The decision to phase out the sale of standard tickets came after statistics showed the majority of commuters opting to use stored value cards or account-based ticketing.

Stored value cards come in the form of EZ-Link cards, NETS FlashPay cards and concession cards, whereas account-based ticketing utilises SimplyGo, effectively ‘payWave’ for transport.

“Fewer than one in 1,000 trips are paid using standard tickets today,” said LTA.

The discontinuation of sales for standard tickets at General Ticketing Machines (GTM) will commence with the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) and Downtown Line (DTL) on Jan 10, 2022—the LTA noting both of which “have the lowest standard ticket sales among all the rail lines.”

Subsequently, the Circle Line (CCL) and North East Line (NEL) will phase out standard tickets sales on Feb 10, 2022.

The North-South Line (NSL) and East-West Line (EWL) will then cease sales of standard tickets on Mar 10, 2022.

Deployment of Service Ambassadors

To assist commuters as standard tickets are progressively discontinued, LTA will deploy service ambassadors at selected train stations between January and March 2022.

It will also “monitor the feedback closely and work with public transport operators to ensure a smooth transition for all commuters.”
