MRT Travel Guide – F1 Singapore Grand Prix 2023

Are you thinking of travelling using the metro/subway — better known as the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in the local context — to get around the city during the Singapore Grand Prix race weekend from Sep 15 to Sep 17, 2023?

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) also said that “the public and F1 ticket holders are strongly encouraged to take public transport to get to the Marina Centre and Padang areas”.

MRT Travel Guide – Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix 2023

Using the MRT to Travel from Changi Airport to the City

Not to be confused with the inter-terminal Changi Airport Skytrain system, the CG 2 Changi Airport MRT station is linked to the airport’s three main terminals (1/2/3).

To get to the City, commuters may take a train to EW 4 CG Tanah Merah MRT station and alight, then transfer to the westbound train towards EW 33 Tuas Link MRT station.

Do take note of the in-train announcements and information systems, which will guide you to the correct platform to board the City-bound train.

Public Transport Fares & MRT Ticketing Information

In Singapore, the travel fares on buses and trains are charged according to the total distance travelled in a journey.

The two most common ways to pay for your public transport fares in the network are using the unlimited Singapore Tourist Pass or a stored-value travel card, like the EZ-Link card.

However, commuters can also opt to use SimplyGo, an electronic mode of payment by tapping and paying for public transport fares, similar to tapping and paying with a contactless bank card purchase at an offline retail store.

You can use a MasterCard/Visa contactless credit/debit card or mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Fitbit Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay to travel on the public transport network.

Commuters should tap in and out using the same mobile payment mode and mobile device, with the same card, as using a mix of cards, mobile wallets or different mobile devices when tapping in and out will result in multiple charges.

Download the SimplyGo mobile application on your iOS or Android device to view your travel transaction history, transit fares incurred and other card-related ticketing needs.

Common Etiquettes When Travelling on the Singapore MRT

Singaporeans usually stand on the left side when on the escalator to allow commuters to walk past on the right side.

We locals also love queueing up for almost everything, and that includes queueing up before boarding and boarding only when passengers have alighted from the train.

If you have noticed, there are no rubbish bins around the Singapore MRT network, so you are advised to keep your litter until you alight and dispose of it outside of the train station.

No eating or drinking is allowed on board MRT trains and at MRT stations, as this helps to ensure that the network stays clean and safe (from liquid spillage falls) for other commuters.

Nearest MRT Station to Food Centres Around the City

Being a multi-racial, multi-lingual and multi-religious society, Singapore has diverse varieties of foods with endless options.

It is common to have a meal at a hawker food centre in Singapore, and it is also great that various MRT stations are conveniently located near these food centres!

During the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix, trackside engineers from the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team even went to the Newton Food Centre for some curry as a “special winning tradition”.

Please refer to the official Food & Beverage listing for F&B options within the circuit park.

Extension to MRT Train Service Operating Hours

The train service operating hours have been extended for the three-day Singapore Grand Prix race weekend from Sep 15 to Sep 17, 2023.

We advise commuters to be at the station at least 15 to 20 minutes before the last train departs for additional leeway due to increased passenger traffic and travel demand.

Please note that all Singapore MRT trains are fully automated and that the last trains will depart strictly according to schedule.
