The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) and the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) on Thursday (Jan 25) are urging people with the O blood group to come forward and donate blood as stocks of that type are running critically low.

“Group O blood stocks have dipped below 6 days and are currently at critical levels due to high usage of these blood types and lower than normal blood donor turnout since the beginning of 2024,” SRC and HSA said in a joint statement.

“As the universal blood group, group O blood is required during emergencies when patients’ blood groups are unknown. Furthermore, nearly half of all patients in Singapore have group O blood and can only receive group O blood.”

SRC and HSA said if group O blood stocks continue to drop, elective surgeries will have to be postponed, and life-saving transfusions could also be compromised.

All healthy individuals with O+ and O- blood groups, between 16 and 60 years, and weighing at least 45kg, to step forward and contribute by donating their blood.

Making an appointment to Donate Blood

Interested donors may call 6220 0183, use the web portal at https://donateblood.hsa.gov.sg, or download the DonateBlood mobile app, available on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, to make an appointment.

They may also walk in to any of the five blood banks or other community blood drives to donate.
