Launch of Spotters by SGTrains
What is Spotters by SGTrains?
Spotters by SGTrains is a crowdsourced system allowing trainspotters to input data through a Telegram chatbot.
The chatbot provides an intuitive interface for trainspotters to input the trains they have spotted or rode during their daily commutes. It is native to the Telegram messaging service, a popular instant messaging application that can be downloaded by all.
To get access to the bot, simply click the link below and follow the bot prompts to enrol yourself. With just a few taps, you will be ready to start recording down your spotting!
In addition, a dedicated portal has been set up that displays a status overview, allowing at a glance access to information.

Features Currently Available
For the initial launch, we currently have the running status for North-South Line (NSL) and East-West Line (EWL) trains, taking into consideration that it has the most number of running trains across the train network.
Spotters will be able to input the trainset they see on passenger service, and will also be able to report trains that may have gone into decommissioning.
An overview of the running status is available on the dedicated portal, listing the train line and the last spotted date for each train.
Any train that is not spotted for a span of 30 consecutive days will be automatically categorised as ‘Not Spotted’.
Privacy Matters
Utmost care has been taken to protect your privacy.
With the exception of the technical support team for the chatbot, nobody, not even the SGTrains Team, has access to your Telegram details when you enrol into the chatbot.
Any data collected will solely be for the purpose of running the bot.
Additionally, your submissions will be masked to the public by an 8-digit system-generated User ID, protecting your identity.
Data Accuracy
We wish to emphasise that spotting data is crowdsourced and as such, the information may not be entirely accurate.
However, we have taken proactive measures by integrating the system with several features to prevent false data entry, such as validating trainsets before entry.
In addition, we have a team of moderators to protect the integrity of the data.
Spotters will also be able to use to build in ‘Report Spotting’ function to highlight inaccurate spotting to the moderators.
Expansion to other train lines? Other upcoming features?
At the moment, the system only supports spotting the train’s running status for the NSL and EWL.
More train lines and other spotting categories, such as spotting location of trains will be implemented in the future.
As such, stay tuned in the coming months!
