MRT Travel Guide – East-West Line closure at Tanah Merah and Simei from Nov 29 to Dec 8, 2025

There will be no train services on the East-West Line (EWL) between Bedok (EW5) and Tampines (EW2) stations, as well as Tanah Merah (CG) and Expo (CG1) stations, from Nov 29 to Dec 8, 2025, for works to connect a new depot and to commission a new station platform.

This round of adjustments to EWL train services was first announced on Oct 3 and follows a similar four-day scheduled closure that took place in December last year.

  • Between Changi Airport and Pasir Ris.

The joint statement by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SMRT said the affected stations are expected to be crowded, and commuters are advised to plan their travel in advance as journey times may be longer.

There will be two shuttle bus services available to commuters to maintain connectivity between the affected MRT stations.

Commuters can take note of the recommended travel routes that would require taking the shuttle bus service through the affected stretches on the EWL from Nov 29 to Dec 8.

  • Between Simei and the west/city – use Shuttle 7,
  • Between Tanah Merah and the west/city – use Shuttle 7 or 8, and
  • Between Changi Airport and Eunos – use Shuttle 8 via Expo.

These shuttle bus services will follow the same fare structure as trains.

  • Paya Lebar (EW8) and Bedok (EW5) stations: 8-min peak frequencies

The joint statement said commuters are advised to plan their journeys in advance as travel times “may take up to an additional 30 minutes”. They may also check LTA’s MyTransport.SG mobile app, as well as LTA’s and SMRT’s social media channels for the latest updates.

LTA said SMRT staff will be stationed at affected stations to assist commuters during the train service adjustment period. EWL train services along other parts of the line would not be directly affected by these closures from Nov 29 to Dec 8.

Closure is required to connect tracks to new East Coast Integrated Depot and to commission a new platform at Tanah Merah station

Before 9 Dec 2025; Platform A (Towards Pasir Ris); Platforms C and D (To and From Changi Airport); Platform B (Towards Tuas Link); From 9 Dec 2025; Platform A (Towards Pasir Ris); WORKS ONGOING (Platforms B and C); Platforms D & E (To and From Changi Airport); Platform F (Towards Tuas Link)

LTA and SMRT are undertaking construction works to connect the tracks from the existing EWL to the East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID) and to connect a new platform at Tanah Merah station.

The new ECID would increase capacity for train launches and withdrawals, thereby enabling greater flexibility to adjust service patterns and respond more quickly to incidents along the line.

EWL trains would be able to launch from and withdraw to ECID from Dec 9.

LTA previously said the modification works at Tanah Merah station, including a new platform (behind construction hoardings), are expected to be completed by the end of 2025

Additionally, Tanah Merah station has been undergoing modification works since 2016 to allow it to serve as an interchange station between the EWL and the future Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) extension.

Eastbound train services of the EWL will start operating from the new Platform A at Tanah Merah station from Dec 9. Commuters heading eastbound to Pasir Ris from Tanah Merah station must board trains from the new Platform A.

However, commuters transferring between eastbound train services at Platform A and train services on the Changi Airport extension would have to use the station concourse to transfer. Westbound train services from Tanah Merah station are unaffected by this arrangement.
