Seletar, Tengah MRT lines being studied, could be combined into a single line and opened from 2040s

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is studying the feasibility of opening two new MRT lines, Seletar Line and Tengah Line, which could serve more than 400,000 households in the 2040s.

The plan was announced by Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat in parliament on Wednesday (Mar 5) during the debate on this year’s budget for the Ministry of Transport (MOT).

Seletar Line and Tengah Line

The Seletar Line has been undergoing feasibility studies since 2019 and was first outlined in the Land Transport Master Plan 2040. It could serve Woodlands, Sembawang, Sengkang West, Serangoon North, Whampoa, Kallang, and the Greater Southern Waterfront.

The other proposed MRT line, tentatively called the Tengah Line, could supplement the transport network in the west and northwest regions. It could serve Tengah, Bukit Batok, Queensway, and Bukit Merah.

Mr Chee said LTA has preliminarily assessed that the Seletar Line and Tengah Line could meet at the Greater Southern Waterfront and that studies will also consider whether the two rail lines could be combined into a single MRT line for seamless connectivity for commuters.

If feasibility studies confirm the two MRT lines are feasible, they will be completed in phases from the 2040s, said Mr Chee, adding that the lines are estimated to serve more than 400,000 households. LTA will provide more details as the studies progress.

Mr Chee also confirmed during the parliamentary debate that the Jurong Region Line (JRL) will extend under the West Coast Extension to link with the Cross Island Line (CRL) and Circle Line (CCL) in the late 2030s and early 2040s.

CCL stage 6, which closes the loop between HarbourFront and Marina Bay stations, comprising three new stations, is slated for completion in the first half of 2026.

Bedok South, Xilin, and Sungei Bedok stations, under the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) and DTL stage 3 extension, are on track to open in the second half of 2026.

JRL stage 1 will open in 2027, followed by the next two stages in 2028 and 2029. Electrical, mechanical, and track works for JRL have since started.

From 2030, the CRL will open for passenger service and become the country’s eighth MRT line.
