7 new cars to be added to Changi Airport's Skytrain fleet; will bring total fleet size to 29 cars by 2029

As part of strengthening Singapore’s position as a global air hub, Changi Airport Group (CAG) on Thursday (Nov 7) announced it will invest S$3 billion over the next six years in Changi Airport Terminals to improve its services and existing infrastructure.

These improvements include upgrading the Changi Airport Skytrain, which links Terminals 1, 2, and 3, and replacing various Skytrain subsystems nearing end-of-life.

Rejuvenation of Changi Airport Skytrain subsystems

The Changi Airport Skytrain, which has been operating as early as March 2006, will undergo rejuvenation and upgrading works to its subsystems as part of CAG’s investment in Changi Airport Terminals over the next six years.

Various Skytrain subsystems, such as signalling and communications systems, are “nearing end-of-life” and will need to be replaced. Seven new Skytrain cars will also be added to provide additional capacity, bringing the total fleet size to 29 cars by 2029.

The Changi Airport Skytrain fleet comprises Automated People Mover (APM) cars from the Crystal Mover series of Japanese supplier Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which are also used across the SengkangPunggol LRT (SPLRT).

In its press release, CAG said: “The rejuvenation will help improve operational performance before the entire system is overhauled in the late 2030s.” However, CAG did not explicitly mention whether the overhaul will occur after Terminal 5 opens around the mid-2030s.

CAG previously awarded Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in March 2016 the contract for capacity expansion works and to provide six new Skytrain cars, expanding the Skytrain’s capacity to cope with the increased passenger traffic when Jewel Changi Airport opened in 2019.
