The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) announced on Tuesday (Nov 23) that 5,000 new housing flats will be built over several years at Mount Pleasant, over the site of the present Old Police Academy.

The land parcel – bounded by the Pan Island Expressway, Thomson Road and the Bukit Brown cemetery, is the size of roughly 46 football fields.

It is near the Central Catchment Nature Reserve and the future Mount Pleasant MRT station. The site is currently heavily forested without any immediate surrounding developments.

SLA also announced that the Mount Pleasant MRT station will open in tandem with the new developments, i.e. it will remain closed as the rest of the TEL3 opens in 2022.

Speaking to The Straits Times on Tuesday (Nov 23), the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said that Marina South MRT station will also open only when surrounding developments are ready.

The present state of land surrounding the Marina South MRT station is bare with minimal developments.

The nearby Marina Bay Cruise Center is dutifully served by the Marina South Pier MRT station on the North-South Line (NSL).

The practice of dormant train stations is not new to the rail network in Singapore.

Woodleigh MRT station on the North East Line (NEL) only opened in 2011 despite being completed in the early 2000s.

This was due to insufficient developments in the vicinity of the station at that time.
