Google stated on their microsite that the Community Mobility Reports aim to provide insights into the trends in response to policies aimed at combating the pandemic.

The report charts movement trends over time, across various categories such as retail & recreation, groceries & pharmacies, parks, workplaces, residential and public transit stations.

“A baseline day represents a normal value for that day of the week. The baseline day is the median value from the 5‑week period Jan 3 – Feb 6, 2020,” stated Google.

Reports created using “aggregated, anonymised sets of data”

Google also emphasised that “no personally identifiable information, such as an individual’s location, contacts or movement, will be made available at any point.”

They added that insights in the report are created with “aggregated, anonymised sets of data from users who have turned on the Location History setting, which is off by default.”
